Your tolerance drops fast in treatment. The first weeks after leaving are when overdose risk is highest. Carry naloxone (Narcan) and tell someone where it is.

- Check if they respond: shout their name and rub their breastbone hard.
- Call 911. California's Good Samaritan law protects you and them from minor drug charges.
- Lay them on their back. Put the nozzle in one nostril and press the plunger all the way.
- Give rescue breaths if you know how, or put them on their side.
- If no response in 2 to 3 minutes, give a second dose in the other nostril.
- Stay with them. Naloxone wears off in 30 to 90 minutes and the overdose can come back.
