Get your papers back
You need ID for sober living, jobs, benefits and banks. Get them in this order: birth certificate, then Social Security card, then California ID.
1. Birth certificate
Order from the county where you were born. If you were born in California, you can order from that county recorder.

For people born in Orange County. Same-day copies in person.
2. Social Security card
Replacements are always free. Never pay a website for this.
Social Security Administration
Replace your card online with a my Social Security account, or call to find your nearest office.
3. California ID card
If you are experiencing homelessness, the ID card is free. Ask your counselor or shelter to sign the DMV no-fee form.
- Fill out the ID application online at dmv.ca.gov before you go.
- Bring your birth certificate (or passport), your Social Security number, and two proofs of address. A shelter or program letter can count.
- Ask for the homeless no-fee ID (form DL 933) if it applies to you.
- Make an appointment to skip the long line.
